Khovsgol tour

Lake Kuvsgul, cradled in the forested mountains of northern Mongolia, is known locally as Mongolia’s dark blue pearl. The lake is surrounded by several peaks near 3000m high, and to the west, there is the Darkhadyn Khotgor depression with plentiful forests and lakes. Mongolia's largest fresh water lake Khovsgol  is 125 km long and plunges to over 260 m and contains 1% of the world’s fresh water. In this region, around Tsagaan Nuur, live the fascinating Tsaatan whose lives revolve around the domesticated reindeer.  Its geological origins, flora and fauna are similar to those of its neighbor, Lake Baikal. Over 100 rivers and streams flow into the lake, but only one river flows out. There is an abundance of rare wildlife in and around the lake including several fish species and big horn sheep, called Argali. The Khuvsgul area is home to diverse ethnic groups including the Khalkhas, Buriats and the Tsaatan reindeer people who migrate between Khuvsgul and Buryatia each year.

The name Gobi originates in the Mongolian language and means "big shallow basin". The Gobi is stretching from southern Khovd aimag to the Dariganga region southern Sukhbaatar, and including parts of northern China, the Gobi is mainly, grass, shrubs and rocks. Oases, which provide some shelter and water for nomads and animals, and sand cover only about 5% of the Gobi. The top 3 sightseeings in the Gobi as follows;Khongoriin Els-Singing Dunes, Yoliin Am-Vulture Gorge and Bayan Zag-Flaming Cliffs.

Khongoriin Els-Singing Dunes is the largest accumulation of sand in the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan- The Three Beauties National Park.  They are 6-15km wide and over 100km long. The sand in the basins between the mountains originated in ancient lakes and rivers. The wind subsequently sahped into dunes. Khongoriin Els-Singing Dunes is so attractive because of an impressive colour combination: the dunes and themselves consist of yellow-white sand. They are bordered in the north by a band of lush, green vegetation supported by a small river, the Khongoriin Gol. Fed from underground sources, this small river runs alongside the dunes for a  few kilometers from, forming an oasis in the dry landscape. It feeds a number of small lakes before seeping into the soil of the steppe once more. The lakes fulfill an important role for migratory birds from South East Asia and China, specially in the spring. Yoliin Am-Vulture Gorge has a rich avifauna of about 240 species in the park. Every observer impressed by the silhouttes of the enormous raptors which are often circling in great numbers above the Yoliin Am -Vulture Gorge. if you are luckyyou will hear the cackle of the rare Altai snowcock in the late afternoon. On the walls of the gorge, the unique flapping flight of the wall creeper can frequently be admired. An easily approached species is the red-billed chough, which is not afraid of people. The river in the Yoliin Am-Vulture Gorge builds up a thick layer of ice over the winter months. The well known Bayan Zag-Flaming Cliffs are situated about 100km north-west of Dalanzadgad province center. They can easily be reached or walked from the ger camps. Here, in 1922, Paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews from the American Musuem of Natural History in New York discovered great numbers of dinosaurs bones. In two years digging, more than hundred individuals wre unearthed. During this time, Chapman and his colleagues first discovered dinosaur nests complete with clutches of eggs; a discovery which drew world wide attention.

The Gobi is understandably very sparsely populated, but the desolate landscape is home to the gazelle, khulan wildass, Bactrian camel (two humped), takhi horse, rare Saiga antelope and the world’s only desert bear-the Gobi bear- Mazaalai. The appropriately named Desert Warbler and the Saxaul Sparoww hide in the  saxaul  shrub, the only species of shrub which can  flourish in the Gobi.
